Day 1 : La Paz - Pelechuco

We will pick you up from your hotel at 08:00 am. Our adventure begins with 8-10 hours car ride to the town of Pelechuco by car. First we follow the shores of Lake Titicaca, 3890 m (12,759 ft), to its extreme north. In the village of Escoma --an ancient indigenous sanctuary-- we take a road leading us inland towards the Ulla Ulla plains and the mountains of the Muñecas and Apolobamba cordilleras. The Pelechuco settlement experienced an economic boom in the time of the Spanish occupation, and its streets and houses are reminiscent of the old castle hamlets in Spain. Nowadays not a single Spaniard remains, only an indigenous population that has adopted Spanish names.

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
Day 2 : Pelechuco - Palca

While our mule drivers load up the horses and mules we start a 1000m (3,200 ft) ascent up to the Keani pass at 4800m (15,744 ft). Our knees will feel the steep descent to the bottom of a very narrow valley that we follow down streams to the village of Palca, surrounded by soaring mountains and llama and alpaca pastures. Here we set up our first camp. Trekking time: 6 - 7 hours

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
Day 3 : Palca - Sunchilli

Today is our greatest challenge because of a very long and extended climb up to the highest pass of the trek at 5100m (16,728 ft). Along the way we pass through a valley of potato crops until we find ourselves beside glaciers, as we enter the very heart of the cordillera. Then we drop down to another valley. Within 8-10 hours’ of walking we reach Sunchilli valley, a gold-rich valley that has been exploited since time immemorial. When the Spaniards arrived they took over the mines, and they said that the Incas cursed them for this. The Spanish established a village at the base of the mountains but an earthquake loosened masses of glacial ice and the ensuing avalanche of ice, mud and rocks completely destroyed the settlement. These days, small mining operations search for the entrance to the famous Inca mine. We camp in the ruins of a mine at 4500 m. Trekking time: 7- 8 hours

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
Day 4 : Sunchilli - Inca Cancha

Just as every day’s routine, we have to climb up again to cross our first pass, fortunately not so high this time. Along the road we will pass llama paths and secondary roads, we continue walking on rolling hills and approach the sacred mountain of the Callawayas: the Akamani 5880m (19,286 ft). Gradually we get closer to the very steep valley where the paths seem to disappear over the edge. We direct ourselves down a narrow vertical gorge where the trail constantly zigzags along what is known as “the hill of thousand bends” (we have counted more than 150 zigs!). A 500m (1,640 ft) climb leads us to our camp at the bottom of a valley where we set up in a very flat, grassy area surrounded by two freezing streams. Trekking time:6 - 7 hours

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
Day 5 : Inca Cancha - Curva

Today is our last day of trekking, which means we have to cross one last mountain pass. After a very long, extended climb and a long stretch among vegetable and medicinal plant cultivation we head towards Curva. We will set up our camp at the shore of a crystalline river. Trekking time: 7 - 8 hours

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
Day 6 : Curva - La Paz

After breakfast we will break camp and start our hike to the town of Curva at 3600m (11,808 ft). Here our transport will be waiting to drive us back to La Paz approx. 6 Hrs. Trekking time: 2 hours

  • Hiking time: 4 to 5hrs.
